Teaching for Justice is an annual conference hosted through UCI Teacher Academy intended for K-12 educators and those interested in integrating the principles of Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies into their professional work. To that end, TfJ’s tenets include deepening content knowledge, supporting classroom implementation, and advancing advocacy.
As a designer, I interpreted these tenets to mean the following: shoring up teacher knowledge and capacity to build new worlds both in and out of the classroom.
To that end, I wanted to include visual imagery to indicate not only education but more importantly to signal to Pasefika, East/South/Southeast/West Asian motifs that are both within the classroom as well as outside of the classroom. We started with a mood board.

This is my first iteration on paper playing around with different motifs. I initially included the 2024 theme, Communities of Care, with the intention that the theme could change every year.

These are some initial digital iterations, playing around with different versions of the open book ranging from abstract to more literal interpretations. I also played around with different flowers, mandala shapes, and star garlands.

These are some typeface options. We eventually opted for Calibri for its rounded features.

These are some initial color combinations. All of the colors were pulled from UCI branding style guideline's secondary colors prior to June 2024.

These are the two-color logo mark lockups that I eventually settled on.
